From the President’s Corner

Despite the many rainy days, spring does seem to be in the air. At RAA, spring brings so may exciting events. The Multi Media Mini Show this month provides the opportunity for all California artists to enter, and wait with baited breath to find out whether or not their mini-art has been accepted. Drives us all crazy every year, doesn’t it? Yes, the MMM Show is very competitive, but that’s part of the fun of it—when your work makes it in, you can be justly proud.

Our Opening Gala Reception will be on Friday, March 12th, from 5-8 pm. Whether you have art in the show or not, come and mingle with the community and other artists. Come and enjoy the little gems of art on the walls and pedestals in the gallery, and know it is a very special event. The Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony will be on Sunday, March 14th, from 1-3 pm.

If you can’t make it to the receptions, the MMM Show will be in the gallery through April 8th, so come in and enjoy. By the way, take-down and take-in for the next show is on Friday, April 9th. This will be the Floral-themed show, and will be a part of the Redlands Horticultural Society’s Flower Show and Garden Tour.

So, a lot is going on…come and play with us all!

Featured Artist Hearrice Dixon: April 10 – May 1

Opening Reception: Sunday, April 11, 2010, from 4:30-6:30

Hearrice Dixon was born in Haughton, Louisiana. art show 290While still very young she and her family moved to Redlands, California where she attended Redlands High School. There she entered an art contest. With winning Honorable Mention, her unique ability was first recognized and she discovered her love of art.

Her interest in working with acrylics began when she enrolled in a class at the University of Redlands. The class used several mediums including acrylics. Hearrice’s aspiration and interest in acrylics prompted her to continue seeking knowledge over the years, which has influenced the technique she uses today.

Before starting a painting, she finds that experimenting with acrylics, with no design in mind along with the use of unusual materials can add spontaneous interest and is a fun experience. For example, when working with acrylics she uses a sponge, to create the desired effect. Most of the subject matter she chooses is landscapes, floral and seascapes. The majority of her paintings are viewed as nonrepresentational.

She is currently a member of the Redlands Art Association and has displayed there, as well as participated in the “Art in the Park” exhibit in 2009.

Artist Statement

In my work, I strive to depict the tranquil and elegant side of nature whether it is a beautiful flower, seascape or landscape. The choice of nature themes appeals to the style in which I paint, emphasizing a lot of emotion and the use of subtle colors.

My technique varies in experience and emotion for me. In each of my paintings, I find it to be relaxing, exciting, occasionally frustrating, awe-inspiring and rewarding. The majority of my paintings have a calming effect that has been expressed by viewers. Upon completion of a painting, I have experienced the same feelings as the viewer. I find this to be amazing.

Being almost exclusively self-taught, I use my own instincts for reference. However, I plan to continue seeking additional knowledge by participating in offered workshops, and exhibits.

Jurist Statement

It has been an honor and a privilege to judge the 2010 Redlands Art Association Multi Media Mini Show. This is a show that truly consists of little treasures of art.

I became aware of the Redlands Art Association while working on the art collection of the National Orange Show. As we were researching the various artists for the show, I heard nothing but praise about the association’s helpfulness and professionalism. Those qualities made judging this show a joyful experience for me.

The characteristics I was seeking as I was critiquing the various pieces were as follows: beauty, skill, inherent meaning, uniqueness, and fulfilled intent. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but there are some aspects that are definable, such as patterns and symmetry, colors that are complementary, interesting textures, and compositions that focus the eye, proportion, and presentation. Of course, work not done with skill and attention to detail, fails no matter how interesting. Inherent meaning is the power of the work. Does it tell a story? Make a statement or illicit emotion in the viewer? Uniqueness refers to art that explores old or new subjects in a way that is fresh and different. And fulfilled intent comes back to what the artist is trying to say. The best art has meaning beyond just an image. It also stands out in a crowd, and dares to be different. The winning entries are wondrous examples of these characteristics.

I would like to congratulate all the entrants. Seeing such a wealth of fine work is a pleasure!

Best Regards,

Marguerite Garth

Celebrate Citrus with the Inland Orange Conservancy

The Inland Orange Conservancy would like to invite you to join us at the annual Celebrate Citrus even which will be held at Prospect Park groves in Redlands on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 1-4 pm. This is a beautiful venue and a pleasant place to paint and show your citrus related artwork.

Each artist will need to bring their own display racks or easels for showing their artwork. Some shady spots are available, but large umbrellas are suggested Each artist needs to bring all of their own necessities: table, char, etc… Artists are responsible for their own monetary exchanges. 15% of artwork sales will be required to be paid to the Inland Orange Conservancy. This money will help defray costs of the Celebrate Citrus event.

We do hope you plan to join us. If you would like to be a part of Celebrate Citrus, simply fill out this form and return it by March 19, 2010.

March Program and Workshop by David Neil Fairrington

March 27, Sat., Workshop

8:30am-3:00pm, RAA Gallery 14 person max

David Fairrington, distinguished for his Portraiture and Fine ADavid Fairrington 2rt, is a California artist well known for his intuitive art that captures the essence of life. His subject matter ranges from Portraits, Dancers, Figures, Western Art, Landscapes and Seascapes.

David’s account of his artistic path is riveting.

“Ever since Vietnam I had wanted to be a portrait painter, so twenty-seven years later I made the decision to stop commercial art and earn my living painting. I took a year and a half off and taught myself how to paint portraits, then leaped into the world of portraiture.

Fairringto SharonPainting is a deep love and a way of life now. It’s what I do to find myself. I consider myself an intuitive painter, meaning I paint straight from my heart. Some clients find the paintings to be an integral part in the making and healing of the self. Some call my paintings doorways. Others refer to them as windows or mirrors to the soul, and use them as tools to look inside. All hopes, fears, loves, and hates go on the canvas. As I paint, I look into myself, and as I do, I see into the image I’m painting. The spirit of that image flows through me and on to the canvas.”

As a premier painter that has painted over 200 portraits of families, children, politicians and noted public figures, David Fairrington is also known as “The Ballet Painter.” David has been commissioned to do paintings of ballet dancers from the School of American Ballet New York City, NY; The New York City Ballet, NY; Westside Ballet Academy, Santa Monica, CA; The Studio Ballet, Fresno, CA; The Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento, CA; and the Peninsula Ballet, Palos Verdes Estates, CA.

Participants will work from their own photos (8×10). They are to bring oils or acrylics, canvas or board and can pre-draw the image before attending the workshop. Also, bring a #4 Filbert soft bristle or nylon brush (clean), one small palette knife and the following Fairrington Crowpaints: Yellow Ochre, White, Burnt Sienna, Cad Red Hue, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue and Raw Umber, plus other colors of your preference. RAA is fortunate to have David Fairrington present this day-long workshop, so, sign up early as space is limited.

David also gives two day and week-long painting workshops on the principles of portrait painting, including color, composition and design theory, multiple styles and techniques in: oils, acrylics, colored pencils and charcoal on different surfaces. Private teaching sessions for individuals are available.
