From the President’s Corner

April is here, and with it comes our always-beautiful Floral Show. I guess we just love creating flowers in our art work—how can we resist the beauty, colors and variety of all the blooms out there in the world. Whether it’s wildflowers on the hillside, or the cultivated gardens all around us, they just call to us with our paint brushes and cameras.

As usual for our Floral Show, on the weekend of April 17th and 18th, we will have beautiful arrangements from some of our local florists, inspired by our artwork. We will hold open house hours on that Saturday and Sunday for the Horticultural Society’s Garden Tour participants. Refreshments will be served. Sign up to host the open house those days, or bring refreshments for our guests. Saturday, 2-6 pm, Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.

Looking forward, RAA’s Annual Dinner Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 2nd at 6:00 pm, at the Redlands United Church of Christ, 168 Bellevue Avenue. For more information, see the article in this newsletter. Sign-up for this great potluck dinner in the gallery!

So, let’s come to the gallery and walk in the flowers….

RAA Annual Dinner Meeting Announced

RAA’s Annual Dinner Meeting will be held this year on Wednesday, June 2nd at 6:00 pm, at the Redlands United Church of Christ, 168 Bellevue Avenue. This will be our usual potluck dinner, and I speak from experience when I say the food is always great, and always plentiful. Bring your favorite dish to share; salads, main dishes or desserts. Table service and beverages will be provided by RAA. Come and have a great (and yummy) time.

In addition to the dinner, we will have the installation of new officers to begin the new club year. We will be recognizing those who have been serving and supporting RAA during this last year. It is an important and festive evening for RAA, and we hope you will all come. Please sign up on the clipboard the gallery so we can have an accurate head count to give the church, and have enough tables set up and ready for the evening.

For questions, contact Judith Sparhawk at (909) 793-1876 or jsparhawk746@yahoo.com.

Art-in-the-Park

Art-in-the-Park is shaping up to be another outstanding event!  Lots of artist signups, lots of publicity.  This year RAA will provide a central cashier station instead of each artist doing their own sales.  If you have been an artist or buyer at Art for Heaven’s Sake!, you’ll know what I mean…each artist will write up a sales receipt but the buyer pays at the central cashier station.  As an artist, you don’t have to make change or send the buyer off to get a charge card transaction.  As the buyer, you can pay for all your treasures at one time.  I think this will make buying easier!  Yea!

We will also have postcards sent out to the RAA mailing list.  Extra postcards were printed for our artists to mail to their clients and prospects.  For sale, 20 cards for $2.00.  If you get your addressed cards back to the gallery by Sat. April 24, we will pay your postage.  After April 24, you will need 26c postage on the cards.

Pick up an Exhibitor’s Information Sheet on the sign-up sheet clipboard.  It should answer all questions.

RAA Tote Bags

New to the RAA this summer will be a 19" x 14"  canvas tote bag available for purchase in the gallery featuring an image by one of our artists. This reusable bag continues our going green efforts of being the first downtown Redlands business to install solar panels.

The bags are made from 80% recycled cotton and 20% recycled plastic (yes, some of those soda bottles). They will be available at Art in the Park at the central cashier desk and there after in the gallery. They’ll be ideal for bringing your art for take in days, and shopping.

Artist Bio Binder Update

Many thanks for the new artist bios I’ve already received – they are now temporarily displayed in the new binder. But we need more!

This is my suggested format

  • 1st page with your studio name, contact details, and any other information your prospective buyer will want. By all means, include a small personal photo. People like to see your photo.
  • 2nd separate page  to include (up to) 3 photo examples of your work, with a caption. Please put your name/studio name on this page, possibly at the bottom so that if the pages were to get mixed up then I would know to whom the page belonged.

If you wished to give me a few 6×4" cards/business cards I could slip them into the bio book so that when a piece of your work is sold or if someone asked they could take your details with them.

I envision the final Artist Bio Binder being like a book so that when you open it the artist information will be on the left hand side and examples of their work will be on the right hand side.

Feel free to email the bios at bizzilizzi7@gmail.com or drop off the sheets at the RAA there is a labeled box above the pigeon holes

Many thanks for your time, I look forward to receiving more new bios.

Clamping Down on Card Sale Procedures

CLAMPING DOWN!!

At our last committee meeting, Feb. 2,2010, I was asked and agreed to work with Sally Wirth to review the card inventory process. While sitting the Gallery the following Monday I started in on the card racks in the West side. There were a couple of artist who had well over 20 cards but no artwork in the present show and who had not paid the $3.00 card fee. Then checking the East side rack I found 5 artist cards displayed but who did not have art work in this show. When you remove your art work form the close of a show and are not participating in the following show, you MUST also remove any cards that you might have on display.

March 5th was the take down for this past show and ALL artwork, including cards, had to be removed as we will be getting ready for the Multi-Media_Mini Show.

April 9th was the next regular take-in. If you brought any of your artwork you may also bring in up to 20 cards to show and no extra fee is charged. Your cards or packages of cards must be enclosed in plastic bags and clearly identified with the artist name, price and quantity per package ( i.e. $3.00 ea. or 4 cards for $10.00, etc). These cards may be on display for up to 6 months as long as you are participating in each monthly show and your cards are clean and in good condition. If not participating in a show your cards must be removed when you remove your artwork.

If you wish to display more than 20 cards, then there is a $3.00 per show fee and there is no limit as to the number of cards per artist. But please, don’t inundate us with so many that we don’t have room for everyone. We don’t want to clutter the gallery with individual baskets or private card racks. We will only use the gallery card racks. Also, you are expected to sign up for sitting even if you only have cards.

When filling out your inventory sheet, would you also include the word "CARDS" and how many. It would really help a lot in our record keeping.

Thank you, Joan Wiley and Sally Wirth

Teen Mania Art, News

Here is a brief update on the Teen Mania, Advanced Art classes that have been going on! Ms. Gloria Steinweg has had a number of enthusiastic and creative students. Our last class focused on the human form combined with the recent Winter Olympics. Students also focused on an abstract sculpture in clay, using a "sport" to emphasize form, inspired by art by Henry Moore.
